January 23, 2007 - Bill Siksay is acclaimed as Federal Candidate in the Next Federal Election.

Enthusiastic Burnaby Douglas New Democrats acclaimed Bill Siksay as the federal NDP candidate for the next Federal election.

"I'm proud to have the continuing confidence of Burnaby New Democrats" said Siksay and I look forward to representing them again come the next election.

Addressing timing of the next election, Siksay conceeded that given the nature of this minority Parliament it was hard to predict a date. He noted that "Burnaby Douglas New Democrats are ready whenever the call comes. We're ready for a spring election and we're ready for a later one."

In his speech to the meeting Siksay emphasized the importance of seeing significant achievements on the environment in the current Parliament. "It is clear to me and to most Canadians that we need touch, enforceable action on greenhouse gas pollution and on climate change now, not later. This Parliament has work to do, and the current opportunity cannot be wasted."

Bill thanked party members for their support for him as he raised difficult issues such as; human rights protection for transgendered and transsexual Canadians, the indefinate detention of six men under the security certificate process - men being held without charge, without conviction and without knowing the evidence against them. "Burnaby New Democrats have never shied away from taking on the tough issues. They understand the importance of acting justly and fairly as a society and as a government."

In solidarity,

Bill Siksay
Member of Parliament
Burnaby-Douglas

Bill Siksay... Works hard. Gets Results.
Bill Siksay has worked on behalf of the people of Burnaby-Douglas for 20 years. He has been a strong advocate for public health care and education, opportunities for new Canadians, our environment, modern transportation solutions, public safety, child care, affordable housing, small business, and much more.

As part of Jack Layton’s team, Bill Siksay has demonstrated true leadership through initiatives such as:

Bill and the NDP Caucus saw the NDP’s Better Balanced Budget passed in 2005 which cancelled planned corporate tax cuts, and instead provided needed funding for health care, post secondary education, community infrastructure including affordable housing, and child care.

In response to Liberal corruption, Bill Siksay joined New Democrats in introducing a 12 point action plan to restore confidence and ethics in our federal Parliament.

Bill fought American-style, for-profit, private health care, and stood with NDP Leader Jack Layton when he presented a four point plan to deal with health care privatization.

Worked for a fair and efficient immigration system to meet family reunification needs, including the “brain waste” caused when overseas professional qualifications are not recognized.

Bill consulted with local seniors prior to the introduction of the NDP’s Seniors Charter of Canada stating that seniors have the right to a fulfilling life with dignity, respect, and security. This includes income security, secure housing, access to quality public health care, and timely access to government services and programs.

Bill Siksay worked hard and got constructive, practical results for the people of Burnaby-Douglas. But much more remains to be done and Bill is committed to continuing to fight for opportunities for you and your family.

The Liberals don’t deserve your vote. Stephen Harper’s Conservatives are still wrong on the issues.

This time, voting for Bill Siksay and the NDP is the best way to get results for ordinary people in Burnaby-Douglas.
